A photo of 28 Kerala police personnel posing on the hallowed 18 steps, called ‘Pathinettampadi’ of the Sabarimala temple triggered widespread outrage among devotees and Hindu organisations.
The image, showing the officers standing with their backs to the ‘sanctum sanctorum’, was viewed as a serious breach of tradition.
Senior police officials responded promptly, with ADGP S Sreejith, the chief coordinator for Sabarimala, instructing an immediate inquiry. Sannidhanam Special Officer KE Baiju was tasked with submitting a report on the incident.
Policemen posed with their backs to the ‘Sannidhanam’ in serious breach of tradition.
The incident took place on Sunday, after the deployment of the first batch of police officers stationed at ‘Sannidhanam’, the holy shrine, ended. The deputed group had just finished their task and took the group photo before returning.
The 18 steps hold immense symbolic and spiritual importance in Sabarimala rituals, with devotees approaching them with deep reverence. As per customs, even priests descend these steps while facing the sanctum to maintain sanctity.
The photoshoot occurred after the temple doors closed for the afternoon during the two-month-long Mandala-Makaravilakku festival season, which began on November 15. The personnel were part of the first batch deployed to manage the daily influx of 70,000 devotees regulated through online bookings. The group photo was taken at the end of their duty, just before a new team assumed responsibilities.
The images went viral on social media, drawing criticism for disregarding sacred customs. Hindu organisations demanded a formal apology from the police, stressing the need for better awareness of temple traditions amongst officials posted at the shrine.
Devotees and religious leaders have called for stricter protocols to ensure that all personnel serving at Sabarimala respect its spiritual customs. The Sabarimala Bench of the Kerala High Court, responsible for temple-related issues, is also closely monitoring developments in this matter.
