Description
A beautiful collectable block of U.S. four postage stamps issued in 1970 in conjunction with the dedication of the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial on May 9th, 1970.The bold self imposing sculpture sits high on the northern face of the wind swept Stone Mountain and is a tribute to proud American characteristics of honor, integrity and sacrifice. It depicts three Southern Heroes, General Robert E. Lee, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in a classic salute. The finite detail, majesty of the characters and freeform character are all part of the mystery and magnificence of the culture.
Conceived in the early 1900's, the Memorial's carving history includes three sculptors and spans 50 years and literally hundreds of individuals. 90% of the carvings were completed in the last 6 years using a thermo-jet torch.
The finished carvings included the disciplines of art, science and engineering and has won the admiration of the nation and will continue for centuries to come.
These stamps have never been used and are as fresh as the day they were sold at the
Post Office over 50 years ago!
Suitable for framing, they would make a great inexpensive and memorable gift for anyone interested in civil war history.
