This is a U.S. government issued Stone Mountain Memorial postage stamp issued in 1970 to commemorate the completion of the carving. Stone Mountain. The stamp was designed by Robert Hallock as an accurate reproduction of the actual carving. Only 130 million stamps were printed.
Stone Mountain itself is known as “the largest exposed mass of granite in the world." It rises 780 feet from the surrounding area, is seven miles in circumference, and covers 563 acres. Today Stone Mountain is best known as a tourist attraction that draws about four million visitors each year. The carving pictured here is on the vertical north face of the mountain and is considered to be the world's largest
bas-relief sculpture.
