Charles Jewett, Jr. "During the Civil War, he served as a white commissioned officer - First Lieutenant - in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 32 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted as a Second Lieutenant on 15 August 1863 from Millbury, Massachusetts. Mustered 17 March 1864. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 3 December 1864, mustering 12 March 1865. From January to March 1865, he did extra duty as Acting Regimental Quartermaster. Resigned 17 June 1865. Fought in 1962 as well." From wikitree
