Both 1998 coins jointly by Canada and China, honour the extraordinary Canadian, Dr Norman Bethune. Bethune, who was born in Gravenhurst, Ontario in 1890, served humanity during three wars: The First World War, the Spanish Civil War and the Sino-Japanese War. In 1938, Bethune went to China to become Chief Surgeon for the Eight Route Army during the war. As well
as designing a Model Mobile Hospital, writing text books and training young Chinese doctors, Bethune served on the battlefield, invented a collapsible operating table and organized medical supply units that could be transported on mule-back. The 49-year old doctor died in 1939 while still in China.
