THE BMW 528i story: a classic case of perfecting what already was deemed near perfect.
The BMW 528i. Five-speed transmission, air conditioning, twin electrically-controlled outside mirrors, telescoping steering wheel and 4-speaker stereo radio!tape cassette are among its equipment. Price: ,000, more or less. Considering quality, performance and the abiding pleasure it provides, the 528i is almost underpriced.
It is the nature of BMW engineers never to refer to a car as perfect. Perfect is so final, so resistant to improvement. Consider the BMW 528i, for example.
Introduced as the 530i, the car had everything desirable in a luxury sports sedan. Speed. Space. Grace. The 530i became the darling of those who cherish things well-done. Accolades flowed. Yet BMW refused to leave the car alone. Adjusting. Refining by degrees. In 1978, Road &Track rated the car “the world's best luxury sports sedan under ,000”, and added,
“it may be the best regardless of price”.
One year later, BMW replaced it with the 528i.
The cars looked alike. But looks proved deceiving. Body weight had been pared making the car nimbler than ever. Most important, the legendary BMW in-line six was taken from 3 litres to 2.8 litres, and its fuel injection system fitted with an exhaust scanning sensor that optimises the fuel/air mixture.
The effects proved amazing and paradoxical: while the car shed a full second from its 0-60 mph time and displayed a youthful pre-emissionlike alertness to the throttle, its fuel efficiency improved by some 25%! Road & Track said “if the 530i was already our favorite sports sedan, the 528i increases the middle-size BMW's margin over the rest”.
This year, BMW has further refined the 528i. Lightening the engine block, flywheel, fuel and transmission cooler lines, and seats for fuel efficiency. Replacing the conventional clock with a more functional LED digital quartz time-piece. Adding a second electric mirror, this one on the passenger side.
But the most important evolution of the 528i is its 5-speed overdrive transmission. The results are most gratifying. The car is quieter and smoother than ever. It’s wonderfully responsive to the throttle. It's a pure delight. And whilst to BMW it may not be perfect, it’s so tantalizingly close that a test-drive is worthwhile even if you’re not sure you’re ready to spend the ,000 or so required to own it.
